Trees

In almost every landscape painting you will find a tree of some sort.

Here I have a number of pen and ink paintings of trees.

Log is an original 2" x 4” pen and ink painting available matted and shrink wrapped for $20.00

It doesn't matter if it is a coniferous or deciduous tree, standing tall, or bent, broken or having fallen to the ground.

It may be a painting of only one or two trees, silhouetted against the sky.

Tree Trunk is an original 4-1/2"  x 4-1/2” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $40.00.

It could be of any season of the year as well, showing the yellow green leaves of spring, the bold greens of summer, the colourful autumn leaves or the bare branches of winter.

Dead Trees is an original 3" x 3” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $20.00.

Always remember that the trunk is the largest at its base and narrows as it gets higher.

Three of a Kind is an original 3" x 5” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $30.00.

OSWOA - Maple Tree 2 and 3

Today I was decided to continue to experiment with different blues and yellows for greens on maple tree leaves, using various reds as a shadow.

I started this exercise last year (see post on 04 July 2011) and hadn't found the time to continue with it.

I continue until I have used all the greens I can mix on my palette.

Quiet Reflection

This is a painting I have been working on (see postings on 19 August 2010 and 18 December 2011) for a little while. Today I finally had the time to be able to complete it.

I changed the shape of the canoe's bow and back as the lines that were there made it look more like a row boat than a canoe. I darkened the red with a touch of French ultramarine blue and painted the reflections into the water.

Next I painted the interior and the trim on the canoe and let it dry before I started to paint the canoeist.

First I used a little burnt sienna for the face and hands. Then using light red I put in the bright coloured life jacket. Next I painted the hair, then the blue jeans and lastly the denim shirt.

Using the same colours I put their reflections into the water.

Once this original 7" x 11-1/4" watercolour is framed it will be available for $225.00.

Congratulations to new collector One 2 One Hair Design of Peterborough, Ontario on their selection of Moonshine (see post on 12 May 2011).

Fast Water

I came across this painting which I had started a while ago (see post 11 August 10) and decided to work on it today.

Some of the rocks needed more definition, so I used that as my starting point.

When I was satisfied with the rocks I started into the water I added various mixtures of dark blue, blue green and yellow into the water trying to create the illusion of movement in the fast flowing river.

When the water was dry I used an exacto knife and picked out the white of the water as it splashed against the rocks.

This is an original 6-1/4" x 9-1/4” watercolour, framed and available for $225.00.

Blue Haze 1

Today I did this little 4" x 6" OSWOA using just French ultramarine blue.

I washed in the sky then gradually added more pigment to the mixture as I brought each layer forward.

This original watercolour is available unframed for $30.00.

Roasting Marshmallows I

It won't be long now before the parks are open and we can go out camping.

One of the nicest things about camping is sitting around the open fire at night. The smell of the wood smoke and roasting marshmallows.

This is an original 3" x 5" matted and shrink wrapped, pen and ink drawing available for $30.00.

Dixon Cove Wreck I

On Friday I was at a workshop with Frances Ferdinands and this is one of two mixed media collages featuring wrecks I did using gel media and acrylic paint.

As you drive between French Harbour and Coxen Hole, the Capital of Roatan, which got its name from the pirate John Coxen who lived in Roatan from 1687 to 1697; you will come across Dixon Cove.

There you will see two ship wrecks visible from shore, their names are supposedly the Tulom & the Alexandria, but so far I haven’t found anything to substantiate that claim other than a mention of the names on a travel website.

Some of the locals I have spoken with claim that the wrecks were two separate incidents and one ship carried lumber and the other carried paint. Both ships caught fire and were abandoned, what remained of their cargos pillaged.

During an attempt to tow the ships out to sea, they broke free and came to rest in Dixon Cove where they have remained since the 1970’s.

This 8" x 10" mixed media painting is of one of the wrecks, which I have seen and photographed many times; when framed will be available for $150.00.

I will post the other beached wreck once it is completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Forest Trail I

Today I have been working on a number of pen and ink drawings, many of which will end up has future paintings.

I finished this one of two riders enjoying an afternoon ride through the York Region Forest, better known as the Vivian Forest.

It is an extensive stand of hard and softwood trees covering many acres (hectares) of land on the Oak Ridges Moraine in northern Whitchurch-Stouffville.

It is located between Highway 48 to the east, Vandorf Side Road to the south, Warden Avenue to the west and Davis Drive to the north.

This original 4" x 6" pen and ink drawing will be available framed for $125.00.

Sable Island Wreck I

Yesterday I was at a workshop with Frances Ferdinands and this is one of two mixed media collages featuring wrecks I did using gel media and acrylic paint.

This 8" x 10" mixed media painting is of a wreck on Sable Island, which when framed will be available for $150.00. SOLD

Solo

Today I am going to the Golden Acrylic mixed media workshop with Frances Ferdinands at KAGS.

It should be an interesting class since we will be creating four art pieces using a variety of gel and paste media during the course of the day.

What I am most interested in is doing the image transfers into a gel skin along with a variety of collage techniques.

Solo is an original 9" x 12" framed watercolour available for $180.00.

Stillness

Today is going to be a very busy day for me.

First I will have to take the all six barn cats to the veterinarian to be spayed or neutered.

Then after dropping them off I will go to KAGS for the Still Life class where we will be doing a painting of clay pots.

After that it is off to lunch with my friend Joanne, before returning to KAGS to sit the art show there as well as having a meeting with the Group who will be showing in Algonquin Park later this year.

After I close the Gallery for the day I will go and pick up my cats and take them home and get them settled in for the night before heading back into Peterborough and have supper with my daughter and bring her dog home with me for the weekend.

Stillness is an original 5" x 7" watercolour painting which when framed will be available for $85.00.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Skiing

After the one day of nice, warm, sunny weather it is back to being cold again 26F (-3C).

With wintry temperatures back I thought a snow scene with skiers would be fitting.

Skiing is an original 5" x 7" framed watercolour and is available for $85.00.

Shelter I

The land is often hilly in the Peterborough area and many times while driving past the farms all you will be able to see is a roof top or only small sections of the barns.

In fact in between the hills you can miss seeing an entire herd of horses or cattle.

This original 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" pen and ink when framed will be available for $125.00.

Ploughed Fields II

On a number of the local farms the tractors have been out and busy preparing the soil for the coming planting season.

The land looks like a patchwork quilt with square areas of rich, dark, freshly turned earth.

Other fields starting to show the bright green of new crops of winter wheat sewn last fall and the pastures and hay fields display a mixture of green and gold as the grasses push up through the soil coming back to life after a long dormant winter.

This original 3-1/4" x 5-1/4" pen and ink when framed will be available for $125.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

ACEO - Growies 5 and 6

It is in winter when you realize just how hardy the grasses, flower stalks and twigs are as they fight against the wind and the elements to stay upright and not be crushed down.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here are all original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. They are priced at $20.00 each and sold unframed.

Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes Show at KAGS

Today I have to go down to KAGS to help hang the Portrait show which opens on 15 April 12 and runs through to 03 May 12.

I have entered my painting of Christine in her wedding dress (see my post on 12 October 2012) which is featured on the poster for the show.

It was interesting to see there are two other paintings of Christine from that day which will be exhibited by other artists from the Portrait Group and I will be taking the garland she had beneath her veil as one of the props for the display.

If you have a chance, please come out and see the show.

Spring Stream I

While driving on the roads out in the country I see scenes like this and if I have the time I will stop and make a quick sketch and take reference photographs to do a painting with more detail at a later date.

This is an original 3-1/2" x 5-1/4" pen and ink painting which when framed will be available for $125.00.

Northern Winter

Yesterday I painted with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painters Group and on the way home ran into freezing rain and today the overcast weather has given us hail and sleet.

I thought it fitting to do a winter scene with a hawk flying; especially since my little Sparrow Hawks that nest under the eaves of the house have returned.

This original, 4-1/2" x 9-1/4" framed watercolour is available for $225.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Winter Scene 3

It seems that even though it is spring, winter just doesn't want to let go and continues to either snow, sleet or hail.

Today I painted with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painters Group and finished this little pen and ink scene of birches in winter.

This original 4" x 4" painting when framed will be available for $65.00.

Logging I

Even though we have had a very mild winter draft horses in many places are still used to skid logs out of the forest.

This is a drawing of my father and two of the logging horses he worked with back in the early 1940's in the logging camps of Quebec.

Once framed this original 5" x 6" pen and ink drawing will be available for $125.00.

Cloud Layers

I am trying to finish a lot of paintings that I have partially finished and then have just new works. This is a painting I had started last year (see post on 29 May 11).

I darkened the sky down a little to make the clouds stand out a little more.

Trying to keep it fairly simple I added a lone pine tree into the foreground.

This original 4" x 5-1/4" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $95.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Autumn Forest

This is another painting I had started last year while in Magnetawan and wanted to finish (see post on 02 October 2011).

Most of the work needed to be in the background. I added a few tree trunks and some orange leaves to break up the sky and the solid mass of green on the left side.

The foreground pine needed to have a little more work done on its branches.

This original 3-1/4" x 4" when framed will be available for $95.00.

Autumn Colours

I decided to work on something new today but wanted to keep with the autumn theme.

I chose an early morning sky when the yellows and golds of the sky add more colours to the autumn leaves and make the coniferous trees seem a little darker.

Once the background trees had been painted in, the foreground was much too dark so I went in with a little bit of China white and painted in the birch tree trunks.

Then using opaque colours such as lemon yellow, cadmium yellow light, cadmium yellow deep and cadmium red light I painted in the brightly coloured yellows and oranges of the leaves.

This original 5" x 6" watercolour when framed will be available for $130.00.

Autumn Reflections

Today I have to go and help set up the Peterborough Garden Show at the Evinrude Centre, 911 Monaghan Road, Peterborough Ontario.

The show will run from this evening through to Saturday at 4pm.

I had started this one late last year (see post on 08 December 11). I thought it a little bland with no strong contrasts to create interest.

I added the darker tress and placed some of the stronger colour behind a few of the birch trees to make them stand out a little more.

I then added the darker colour into the reflections in the water and added a wash of burnt sienna over some areas of the water for a little more interest.

When framed, this original watercolour painting will be available for $130.00.

By the Canal

I have pulled out a number of autumn paintings that I had started a while ago and will be finishing them over the next couple of days.

This is one I did on location when a group of us went out to paint by the canal in Bobcaygeon, Ontario a couple of years ago.

The only thing that was needed to complete this painting was to darken the water and add some shadows onto the rocks.

This original 6" x 9-1/4" watercolour, when framed will be available for $175.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Abandoned

I enjoy doing paintings of the many barns in the area. Unfortunately many of them are left to the elements and are gradually falling down or being torn down when they become damaged during a storm and it is very costly to insure them for their replacement value.

This is the first painting for the start of another 30 Day Challenge. I will continue to post the painting I finish each day during the course of the month. I hope you will return often to see the postings.

I would like to thank returning collector Mrs. Margaret Legace of Alliston, Ontario on her purchase of this original, framed 5" x 7" watercolour painting.
