ACEO - Evening Forest 8

Today I set up the Kawartha Arts Festival which will be held 01-02 September at the Fenelon Falls Fairgrounds, in Fenelon Falls, Ontario.

While on my way to Fenelon Falls I noticed that some of the maples were already changing colour. I won't be long before the tree limbs are bare once again and winter will arrive.

After returning home I decided to work on this little painting of the forest in the evening.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

Barrrels - A Work in Progress

Today I went to Lang PioneerVillage and Museum in Keene, Ontario to hang the Outdoor Painters' Group show in the MacKelvie Gallery.

While there I took a number of photographs of the people wearing period costumes as they did various chores around the village. It included everything from weeding the vegetable garden, bringing fresh baked bread to the hotel, feeding the chickens or the blacksmith making horseshoes.

A number of us decided to do a painting of the General Store. I didn't want to do the whole building so I chose the barrels they had on one corner of the porch. I liked the contrast between the white of the main support beam against the darkened windows of the storefront and the wooden barrels.

Since I was painting outside and the light gradually shifts as the sun makes its way across the sky I blocked in the shadows on the barrels and on the rock work of the porch corner.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have more of it completed.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Northern Lights - A Work in Progress

Today I was at KAGS waiting for an artist to come in and sign her contract and pay to rent the gallery for an upcoming show.

I decided to do something productive and work on this piece (seeing postings on 09 Dec 2010, 21 February 2012, 29 May 2012 and 10 July 2012).

I finished painting in the background trees and started to paint a lot of the rocks. Then I indicated where I wanted to put the foreground dead tree trunks.

After getting the contract signed, the person realized that they had forgotten to bring a cheque and had to go out and return with the funds before the rental agreement could be completed.

While I waited some more and finished painting in the rocks and still had time to draw in one of the large foreground pine trees.

Next I will have to decide where I will place the rest of the closer trees.

I will post this painting at a later date once it is completed.

Pink Beauty - A Work in Progress

I wanted to work on a floral painting today and I have always enjoyed seeing water lilies on the lakes.

This pink water lily is usually found in the Caribbean on the resorts as a decorative plant in their water gardens.

I will post this painting once I have more of it completed.

Dawn Silhouette 2 - A Work in Progress

With having the Executive meeting at KAGS today I do not have a lot of time to paint.

So I brushed in a sky with French ultramarine blue and used bright red in the lower part of the sky and left the bottom of the paper white for snow.

I will have to decide what type of tree or trees I will silhouette against the sky and post this painting at a later date.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Frozen Birches - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I started a while ago (see posting on 13 May 2010) and decided to finish one of the three remaining trees that have not had the birch markings added.

I completed the birch tree on the left side of the painting along with tidying up the other two remaining trees.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have completed one or both of the other trees.

Autumn Forest 2 - A Work in Progress

This is a painting where I put various autumn colours down and let the colours blend together on the paper; making sure to keep some areas white.

Once the paint was dry I painted the area for sky in and around the leaves.

I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.

Purple Rocks 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Today I went out sketching on my farm with some of the members of the both the Outdoor Painters' Group and the Buckhorn Artists' Group.

Purple Rocks 1

These are some of the rocks along the shore of the Snelgrove Brook which runs through the back part of my property.

Purple Rocks 2

I will post both of these paintings as more works is completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Algonquin Morning - A Work in Progress

This painting doesn't need a lot more done to it in order to be completed (see post on 05 May 2011) and I would like to have it completed in time for the show at the Visitors' Centre in Algonquin Park.

The background needed a few slightly more detailed trees put into it to fill in some of the open spaces and I added a few birds into the sky but I am still not totally happy with it.

I will post this painting at a later date when I feel it is finished.

Drawing a Horse and Sleigh - Basic Shadows

This is a drawing I had started earlier this month (see posting on 05 August 2012) and since I had some time while I was waiting to meet my husband for supper to celebrate our anniversary I decided I would add some more details.

Once I determined my light source I added some shading and added a few more details to the people in the sleigh.

Tightened up the outline of the sleigh and lap rug as well as put some shadows on both and the main shadow beneath the sleigh and the horse to give the illusion that they were grounded on snow.

Next I started working on the horse making the harness more distinct, putting in some shading to give the horse roundness and indicate where the muscle masses are and darkening the hooves.

I will post this drawing at a later date once it has been completed.

Grasses 1 - A Work in Progress

Today I was experimenting with a round brush to create leaves and blades of grass.

I mixed a green using French ultramarine blue and raw sienna and rolled the brush on the paper to make different leaf shapes.

Once the paint was dry I washed in a background using the French ultramarine blue.

I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.

Fresh Snow 1 - A Work in Progress

Today we had visitors who had come through the Great Lakes on their boat from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Today seven originals sold from Heather Grant, Barbara McGregor, Irene Smith, Susan Sydney and Diane Collins.

This is a small painting I had started last year (see post on 18 October 2011 and 09 March 2012) as an exercise in using a round brush to create grasses and growies.

Today I added some trees to the painting while sitting at the show. Where I am set up is at the back of the room by the door. It is a nice place to work from as it was another wonderful, warm, and sunny day with a nice breeze blowing through the open door which kept the heat from becoming unbearable.

I would like to thank new collector Tracy Cooper of Toronto, Ontario on her purchase of The Herd (see post on 30 September 2010).

The hours for our show are:
16 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm

Rocky Coast

Today brought us sunshine and cooler weather as well  which made it ideal for people to come out to see the art show.

In between speaking with many of the people who attended the show I spent most of the day working on working on this painting of a lighthouse and the rocky coastline.

Originally it was designed to go into an oval mat, but not always being one to stay within the lines I extended the edges and it could also go into a rectangular mat as well.

Just another choice I will have to make when I go to frame it.

This original 3-1/2" x 5" watercolour when framed will be available for $135.00.

Six originals were sold from Heather Grant, Bonnie Windover, Lorraine Ryan and Bonnie Windover along with pottery from JoAnne Connell Northey. Small items were also sold by Diane Collins and Lorraine Ryan.

The hours for our show are:

This is another painting I had started in the Doug Mays workshop earlier this year in the spring. It is a horizontal version of a vertical painting I did of the same scene (see post on 21 Jun 12).

It still needs a little more work before it is completed. I will post it at a later date.

Today was the first half day of the show. Although not many people attended four originals were sold by Heather Grant, Tom Young, Barbara McGregor and Bonnie Windover. Pottery was purchased from JoAnne Connell Northey and small items were sold by Diane Collins and Barbara McGregor.

Hanging the Shades of Summer Show

Today I spent the most of the day hanging the art show at Buckhorn.

Due to a power outage last night caused by a tree being uprooted during the storm and taking out a hydro pole, which caused a nine hour black out for the area; we were unable to hang some of the paintings last night.

Unless we wanted to do it by flashlight, which would have taken a lot longer and trying to hold a flashlight and put a large painting on two small hooks on the panels is an accident waiting to happen.

Not to mention that bringing in painting in the pouring rain is not a good idea either and I really didn't want to be there until well after midnight and still have to return today to finish.

My friend Heather just couldn't get herself motivated on how she would like to have her art work displayed on her panels so I hung her show for her while she cleaned the glass on my paintings and helped some of the others with hanging their art.

After lunch Heather helped me with hanging my art work, which we did in record time as Heather and I have hung many shows together and once we get started things go up fairly quickly.

We are now ready for our opening tomorrow morning.

The hours for our show are:

11 Aug 12- 10:00am - 5:00pm
12 Aug 12 - 12:30pm - 5:00pm
13 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm
14 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm
15 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm
16 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm
17 Aug 12 - 10:00am - 5:00pm
18 Aug 12 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
19 Aug 12 - 12:30pm - 5:00pm

Blue Skies 4-6 - Three Works in Progress

It was interesting setting up the panels in the church tonight for the 22nd Annual Shades of Summer Art Show.

We had a violent thunderstorm that just didn't want to leave the area and it poured down rain the entire time we had to bring the panels inside the building.

If that wasn't bad enough the entire area from Selwyn to Buckhorn was without power so we had to set up all the panels in the dark with the aid of three flashlights.

Needless to say I decided against hanging my paintings.

Blue Sky 4

After all tomorrow is another day and trying to hang paintings in the dark using a flashlight is not going to be an easy task.

Blue Sky 5

Once I returned home I painted a few blue skies in the hope that tomorrow will be a bright and sunny day.

Blue Sky 6

I will post these paintings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Blue Lines 2 and 3 - Two Works in Progress

Today I was just playing with various mixtures of  blue paint on some small pieces of paper.

Blue Lines 2

They may end up as abstract paintings, or could possibly become landscapes. It all depends on what I find in the paintings when I go back in and work on them.

Blue Lines 3

I will post these paintings at a later date once they are completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Fog Rising 1-3 - Three Works in Progress

Often in the mornings there is fog on the lake, creating an eerie feeling that something is hidden within the mist.

Sometimes there are only tendrils of fog rising off the surface of the lake; other times the islands seem to be floating on a blanket of mist, no longer grounded to the lake.

Fog Rising 1

It is on mornings like this that sounds are muffled and it is hard to determine the source.

Many of the birds are hidden from view as they glide across the lake's surface. The only way you know they are close is when you hear the haunting melody of the loons or the low murmur of the ducks as they call to their brood to keep together.

Fog Rising 2

But eventually the rising sun spreads its warmth, the fog lifts and the lake once more, is clear and back to normal.

I will post these three paintings at a later date as each one is completed.

Drawing a Horse and Sleigh - Outline Drawing

Today I was looking through some photographs I had taken at the All About Horses Show in Lindsay earlier in the year of various carriages and sleighs as well as pictures of draft horses.

Working from various photographs I made a rough sketch of a draft horse pulling a sleigh. I put blocked in some of the harness on the horse and set the shafts of the sleigh into the harness loops.

More details were details were added to the sleigh, the people were given a little more shape and the lap robe was given a little more definition.

The shape of the horse was tightened up; reins and blinkers were added on the bridle and sleigh bells were indicated on the harness.

I will post this drawing as more work on it has been completed.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.
